Bonding with your new baby is more than huge it’s essential. Often families concentrate on mom and baby time or family time with baby but making sure that time is set aside for dad and baby is just as important.
Often a dad is placed in a supporting role when that new baby arrives. It makes sense that dad supports mom and helps welcome baby, but that doesn’t mean that dad doesn’t need some one-on-one time with baby. It’s good for him and great for the baby.
The reality is that it can take time and it’s a process. Dad can do a number of things to make this time special for both baby and him. While dad is having cuddle time or managing a night feeding, mom can take that time for herself. Having time daily strengthens attachment.
Moms need to encourage and plan for dad-baby bonding. Often moms feel they need to do it all – all the feedings, all the diapers, all the playtime, all the baths, etc. – but in truth, it’s much better to share these with your partner. Dad can be a huge asset to the daily routines with the baby.
Parents with older children often struggle to manage their children’s routines and needs while also caring for their new baby. Mom needs time with the older children and dad can take over with the baby to make this happen. Also, while mom is with the baby, dad is the perfect person to spend time caring for the older ones. In addition, older children love to have some time with the baby to build sibling bonds – so don’t forget family bonding time.
Planning ahead for those first few months with the baby will make sure that everyone has time to spend with the baby so that lifelong bonds can begin.
