Baby Gear: Some Things You Can Do Without

There’s a plethora of baby gear and equipment you can sink your money into, but take a second to consider – “Do I really need that item?” Some things you can do without and still have a well-set up nursery or baby care items. Here are a few to consider.

The Diaper Bag

I know you are thinking – um, I need a good diaper bag! Before you get all excited consider this. There are a lot of cute or snazzy diaper bags out there with a big price tag connected to them. Is it worth the money and do they really have something magical to them? Often the answer is –no. The price doesn’t justify the bag when a sturdy well-made backpack or messenger bag will work as well at a fraction of the expense. However, if you just want one of those charming diaper bags this is a great thing to put on your baby shower list.

The Baby Food Processor

While it’s another great item, it can be replaced with a regular food processor or blender which you probably already have. I know they are sweet and look cute, but their function isn’t superior to what you have in your kitchen right now. Not to mention, it’s another item to store and manage – a real problem for those who have limited space already.

The High Chair

Today there are so many alternatives to the high chair for babies and toddlers that you should think about this carefully. Young babies just starting solid foods really don’t need their own chair and the fit of high chairs often isn’t the best for these little eaters. IKEA has a really good high chair that is easy to clean and very affordable.

The High-End Crib Bedding

Babies don’t need high-end sheets and the bedding sets are often full of items you shouldn’t use for baby’s bedtime (bumpers, heavy quilts, etc). Yes, they are darling – but is that a reason to have them? Choose instead some nice fitted crib sheets that wash well and last. Hey, they can be just as cute as the pricey bedding sets.

The Bassinet

If you’ve been to a baby store you’ve seen these charming infant beds, resist the urge to buy. Instead, focus on getting an appropriate and sturdy crib that will get much more use over time. If you want your baby with you consider a pack-n-play or mosses basket for those weeks you’ll need it. The pack-n-play also can be used over the longer term.

The “Special” Baby Detergent

Honestly, if you choose a detergent brand that is free and clear of perfumes or dyes you can use this for your whole family’s laundry. This will save you money and your whole family will benefit from this choice.

The Diaper Disposal Systems

These do sound neat – bagging dirty diapers into a special container until it reaches the maximum capacity. The smelly truth is people try to max out the maximum capacity and “forget” to empty it. Why not pass this whole system over simply by bagging diapers and getting them into the main trash bin as quickly as possible? There are disposable diaper sacks that can be purchased if you feel necessary, but it’s the habit of taking care of diapers as soon as possible that will make the real difference.

The Wipe Warmer

Here’s one that sounds like a good idea but has too many drawbacks in practical use. These units can cause wipes to become dry quickly. Warm environments are breeding grounds for germs – enough said. Many of these warmers have been recalled over the years and the kinks have yet to be totally worked out. Finally, a baby used to a warm wipe will be in for a big surprise when one isn’t available.

The Changing Table

Here’s one to skip because there are a lot of better ideas. Purchasing a good changing pad and securing it to a low dresser or bench makes so much more sense as those have long-term use. You don’t need to take up nursery space with a changing table that is used for a limited time. Having portable changing pads is great for your “diaper” bag and other locations throughout your home because you probably won’t be changing every diaper in the baby’s nursery.

Obviously, you purchase or get whatever makes your life easier in caring for your baby. However, taking a moment to think through purchases and real needs ahead of time will probably save money and time in the end. So ask yourself first – “Do I really need that?”
