Dressing a baby for the weather doesn’t take a Ph.D., but there are some important rules of thumb that you’ll want to consider.
Fabrics and Fit
- Fabrics that have stretch and give are helpful to provide plenty of room for the baby to be comfortable without constricting. They are also easier to take off or put on.
- Lighter-weight fabrics are perfect for layering.
- Choose cotton clothes and blankets. Those blankets that are usually “super cozy” are often polyester and won’t breathe. A baby can get overheated quickly.
- Elastic on sleeves and around leg openings or waist should be loose enough for ease of movement and ease of dressing.
- Avoid those garments that fit tightly or have constricting properties – not only will you struggle to dress the baby but the baby will probably not appreciate how it feels.
- Full garment snaps or zippers are much easier to get on and off.
- Snaps and zippers down both legs make diaper changes easier.
- Ribbons around the neck area can be of concern along with buttons. Be sure that they are secure and well-sewn on. Keep an eye on them after each wash looking for fraying or loosening of buttons. Repair or remove them immediately.
- Look for fabrics that wash well – they’ll be getting a workout and you want them to last as long as your baby can wear them which is often a very short window.
Colder Weather
- Layer it Up – Using layering is actually more efficient in keeping babies warm than having heavier clothes on them. This allows you to take away or add a layer depending on the temperature. Using blankets to cover the baby as needed is an easy add-on.
- Breathability – Choose breathable fabrics so your warm little one doesn’t overheat. Again, layering helps with this offering layers that trap warmth.
Warm Weather
- Minimize Layers – Warm weather means allowing your baby plenty of airflow. Lighter fabrics help. A good rule of thumb is to dress the baby in one more layer of clothing than you are wearing. Remember you can always take off layers.
- Sun Shade – Hot days mean keeping the baby comfortable and away from the sun. Using a sun hat or bonnet can help provide some protection to the baby’s head.
Over the course of each day, regardless of the weather, you’ll be changing clothes several times. Make this time more enjoyable for you and your baby by keeping these tips in mind.
